Preserving wintering frugivorous birds in agro?ecosystems under land use change: Lessons from intensive and super?intensive olive orchards

چکیده

Fleshy fruit production is becoming more intensive worldwide, but how this affects frugivorous birds poorly known. In the Mediterranean region, and super-intensive olive orchards are fast expanding, potentially affecting millions of wintering songbirds. Here, we test idea that intensification may benefit birds, at least locally, due to increased availability, while negatively wider bird community management, structural simplification landscape homogenisation. We estimated abundance surveyed in early, mid- late winter, traditional, southern Portugal. used Hierarchical Modelling Species Communities relate species richness, prevalence management intensity, winter period, availability context, evaluated role frugivory modulating observed responses. Olive was much higher throughout than traditional orchards, both trees on ground. Frugivorous most abundant (blackcap, song thrush, robin) were positively affected by and/or increasing cover level had relatively minor effects after accounting for other variables. Non-frugivorous richness many non-frugivorous lower or landscapes dominated cultivation. Synthesis applications. While community, our results suggest farming can contribute sustaining large numbers region. As not seen as damaging farmers, there an opportunity promote their conservation which requires increase habitat heterogeneity, reduce risks such mortality associated with mechanical harvest contamination pesticide residues. Overall, recommend efforts manage farmland biodiversity should consider impacts opportunities crop intensification.

Food Security and Land Use Change under Conditions of Climatic Variability

Food security covers aspects at all spatial levels from local to global and from an interdisciplinary and systemic food systems perspective. This book aims to better understand environmental, nutritional, agricultural, demographic, socioeconomic, political, technological, and institutional drivers, costs, and outcomes of current and future food security. Interactions with contextual factors inc...

Land cover land use mapping and change detection analysis using geographic information system and remote sensing

Land cover/land use categories are relevant components in land management. Understanding how land cover/land use change over time is necessary to assess the consequences of humans and natural stressors on the earth’s environment and resources. The aim of the study was to map and monitor the spatial and temporal change in land cover/land use for the periods of 1977, 1991 and 2016 and to predict ...

Preserving Properties Under Change

In this paper we discuss the question which properties of a formally verified component are preserved when the component is changed due to an adaption to a new use. More specifically, we will investigate when a temporal logic property of an Object-Z class is preserved under a modification or extension of the class with new features. To this end, we use the slicing technique from program analysi...

Controls on soil carbon sequestration and dynamics: lessons from land-use change.

Soil carbon (C) dynamics and sequestration are controlled by interactions of chemical, physical and biological factors. These factors include biomass quantity and quality, physical environment and the biota. Management can alter these factors in ways that alter C dynamics. We have focused on a range of managed sites with documented land use change from agriculture or grassland to forest. Our re...
